Various sources report this afternoon the NHL will officially announce the cancellation of the 2013 Winter Classic.
As per TSN.CA: “The move has been speculated for some time, as the league’s payment plan for use of The Big House at the University of Michigan calls for $250,000 to be paid to the school on Nov. 2. The rest of the payment schedule was to have $1 million paid on Dec. 7 and on Dec. 28 and $650,000 on Jan. 18.”
SPECTOR’S NOTE: So, this morning’s earlier report suggesting the WC wouldn’t be cancelled for another two weeks was wrong. The report goes on to suggest the NHL could stage the 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium should the league finalize a new CBA with the NHLPA. Expect the league to express its deep regret for the decision, and both sides to blame the other for this. This move doesn’t mean the rest of this season is in danger, though if there’s no progress in CBA talks by December, that becomes a distinct possibility. Let’s hope both sides get off their collective arses and get back to the negotiating table soon!
