Updates on the Ducks and Blue Jackets, plus the latest on the Hurricanes, Maple Leafs, Blackhawks and Flames.
TSN.CA: Darren Dreger weighed in on recent comments by Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray which appeared to suggest he’d be willing to move assets like Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan, and young defenseman Cam Fowler for the right price. Not so, according to Dreger, who goes on to report the Ducks aren’t shopping those players, but if those like Perry, Getzlaf and Ryan fail to improve, one of them could be shopped, perhaps at the trade deadline, more likely at the NHL Entry Draft.
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Eric Stephens reports Getzlaf and Ryan acknowledged their play this season has contributed to the Ducks problems but added they wanted to stay and be part of the solution. They also acknowledged Murray made his comments to light a fire under them to step up their play.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Remains to be seen if the message was received, but at least it was acknowledged. If any of those guys hit the market the asking price will be steep, because Murray said he’s not interested in draft picks, and it’s believed he’d want a comparable player in return.Tough to make that kind of deal, especially this time of year. If one of them is to be moved (and I think it would be Ryan), it probably won’t happen until near the June Entry draft weekend, when teams have more money and more willingness to invest in big ticket players.
NBCSPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK/TSN.CA: report Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson reiterated he has no plans to trade team captain Rick Nash, whose agent again stated his client doesn’t want out of Columbus.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I believe them, but don’t expect those denials to keep Nash’s name out of the rumor mill.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Luke DeCock Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu and defensemen Tim Gleason and Bryan Allen admit to be uneasy with all the trade talk swirling about them, acknowledging they could be moving on by the trade deadline. DeCock also reports there might be interest in forward Alexei Ponikarovsky and blueliner Jaroslav Spacek.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Of this group, Gleason and Ruutu are the mostly likely to be moved.
TORONTO SUN: Dave Hilson reports Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke acknowledged trade talk has picked up of late but “we’re listening more than anything”.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Chris Kuc reports Dan Carcillo’s recent knee injury could force GM Stan Bowman to make a move if it appears he’ll be out for a lengthy period. Bowman acknowledged he was shopping around prior to Carcillo’s injury.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Blackhawks are believed in the market for a second line center and a number six defenseman.
TORONTO STAR: Damien Cox uses the occasion of the Calgary Flames 9-0 beatdown at the hands of the Boston Bruins to call for Flames management to rebuild.
