FOXSPORTS ARIZONA: Craig Morgan reports the Phoenix Coyotes have re-signed goaltender Mike Smith to a six-year contract pending NHL approval.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Considering the uncertainty over the Coyotes future, re-signing Smith is a significant signing for the club. It’s believed his new deal could be around $5.7 million per season, which is also a very affordable move, as Smith could’ve earned up to $7 million per season on the open market.
Bringing back Smith should provide stability in goal for the Coyotes, though there was some concern last season over his durability as he struggled through injuries. That, however, was chalked up more to the shortened season.
If he returns to the form displayed in 2011-12, when he backstopped the Coyotes to the Western Conference Final, the Coyotes could be a perennial playoff contender again.
