The latest from TSN and The Globe and Mail.
TSN.CA: Darren Dreger recently reported the Columbus Blue Jackets received just one offer for unhappy center Jeff Carter so far, and it was a low one at that, though Dreger didn’t elaborate as to what it was and which team made it…Dreger also believes we’ll see more player movement in the days leading up to the trade deadline…The names of Buffalo Sabres forwards Derek Roy, Brad Boyes and Paul Gaustad remain in the rumor mill. Some believe the Detroit Red Wings could have interest in Gaustad or Montreal’s Travis Moen…Columbus goalie Steve Mason is available…The Islanders aren’t shopping goalie Evgeni Nabokov…Avalanche center Paul Stastny’s name is often tossed around in trade rumors, but with the Avs currently battling for a playoff spot, they need him…There’s no reason to believe the LA Kings are shopping defenseman Jack Johnson.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Eric Duhatschek points to several factors slowing this year’s trade market heading up to the trade deadline. One is the small number of “sellers” this year, while the teams which are considered sellers (Columbus, Edmonton) aren’t in the market for draft picks, as they’re looking for players to help them now. Another is that the return teams have received for moving big name players in the recent past (like Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk) weren’t as good as had been expected. Another is more GMs aren’t looking toward the trade deadline to build up their rosters as much as they used to, preferring to look instead toward the draft…Duhatschek also suggested forward Ryan Malone could be on the move if the Tampa Bay Lightning falter …
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sure, Carter could be moved at the trade deadline, but I still believe the earliest it could happen is this summer…If the Sabres continue to roll as they have over the past six games, they might not be too keen to move Roy, Boyes, Gaustad or anyone else…I doubt there’ll be much interest in Mason…Stastny won’t be shopped as long as the Avs stay in the playoff hunt…I concur with Dreger’s take on Johnson…Malone could be shopped, but recent indications from Tampa Bay suggest GM Steve Yzerman will hang onto him. We’ll find out soon enough.
