OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Dallas Stars center Brad Richards has reportedly turned down a “fair market extension” from the Stars but still wants to stay. It’s rumored he wants an eight-year extension but nobody’s making that kind of offer with the current CBA expiring in 16 months. The Kings, Rangers and Sabres are rumored to have interest but GM Joe Nieuwendyk reportedly wants to roster players and a draft pick from the Rangers to open the negotiations….There’s “some discussion” the Panthers could try to package Stephen Weiss and David Booth. Weiss has a “no-movement” clause but would likely waive it. Garrioch suggests that option might be attractive to the Sabres….The Oilers may try to move Dustin Penner but many doubt they’ll move Ales Hemsky as the asking price is so high…Talks has the Capitals and Avalanche interested in Kings backup Jonathan Bernier…The Panthers also might try to move Radek Dvorak for a draft pick. Tomas Vokoun is available but his cap hit is high…There’s talk Nashville’s J.P. Dumont might waive his “no-move” clause to facilitate a trade…There’s a good chance Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid will move…New Jersey’s Jason Arnott could be an option for teams unable to land Brad Richards…The Predators are seeking a scorer and apparently have contacted the Sabres about Thomas Vanek, the Maple Leafs about Clarke MacArthur and the Oilers about Ales Hemsky.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Nieuwendyk late last week claimed he hadn’t talked players with rival teams but of course it’s possible that might’ve changed since then…Booth also has a “no-trade” clause so both he and Weiss would have to agree to go to the same team for a package offer to work…The Capitals insist they’re not looking to add another goalie, and quite frankly it would be odd if the Kings traded Bernier, unless they were to get a proven first line scoring winger in return, and I doubt he’s got enough value to land that…Don’t think there’s much of a market for Vokoun right now…Dumont reportedly hasn’t been asked to waive his movement clause…Arnott could indeed be an option for clubs chasing Richards if the latter isn’t available…Can’t see the Preds accepting Vanek’s huge salary. MacArthur would be a more affordable option, as might Hemsky.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports the Chicago Blackhawks are interested in Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid but they would want a high-end prospect like Nick Leddy in return. The Kings aren’t willing to part with Brayden Schenn as part of a deal for Ales Hemsky so the Oilers might have to consider other Kings prospects. Montreal, Minnesota and Nashville may be in the trade mix for Dustin Penner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers could make a move by the deadline but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Smid or Jim Vandermeer rather than Hemsky and/or Penner.

ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reports Nashville Predators GM David Poile denies there’s any truth to recent rumors linking Predators forward J.P. Dumont to the Montreal Canadiens. Poile claimed he hasn’t asked Dumont to waive his “no-movement” clause.
