The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Roman Hamrlik to a two-year, $7 million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hamrlik hoped to remain with the Canadiens but they were only offering a one-year contract. He takes a significant pay cut down to $3.5 million per season and gets an additional year. While Hamrlik is getting up there in age and has faced criticism for a perceived lack of footspeed, he logged big minutes last year for the Habs and could be considered a possible veteran leader on the Caps defense.
