David Steckel becomes the second ex-Capital to criticize Alex Semin…Would Kimmo Timonen make a good captain of the Flyers?…Who’ll be on the Islanders blueline to start the season?…Birthday greetings to Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau…Wondering where all the Thrashers fans have gone?…A humerous look at this off-season’s winners and losers…Alexander Ovechkin makes a cameo in a Russian rap video.

HALF SMOKES: Adam Vingan observes former Capitals forward David Steckel agreed with the criticisms leveled at Alexander Semin by former teammate Matt Bradley.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sour grapes from two former Capitals, or the general feeling in the Caps room toward Semin? You make the call!

FLYERS FAITHFUL: “Marcello D” suggests defenseman Kimmo Timonen might be a good candidate to replace the departed Mike Richards as team captain, noting he was the former captain of the Nashville Predators. Timonen, however, suspects he’ll be an alternate this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Marcello noted the early talk has Daniel Briere and Chris Pronger as the likely candidates. I’m guessing it’ll probably be the latter.

LIGHTHOUSE HOCKEY: “Dominik” speculates on which defensemen will form the Islanders blueline corps when the club opens this season. Mark Streit, Andrew MacDonald and Travis Harmonic are shoo-ins, with Milan Jurcina and Mark Eaton to join them. After that, it gets interesting.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No wonder there’s rumors GM Garth Snow is shopping around for blueline depth and thought to have offered a training camp invite to Bryan McCabe. Their blueline’s not thin, it’s anorexic.

EYES ON THE PRIZE: wishes former Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau bonne fete (happy birthday).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: When I was a kid, I believe it was in 1972, Beliveau traveled to my hometown of Yarmouth, NS, for the then- annual tuna fishing tournament, and took part in the parade through town. As a young Habs fan, I was excited to see “Le Gros Bill”, and remember him waving in our direction as his car passed by. Now I know he wasn’t waving directly at me, but to my young eyes, he was. That’s my Beliveau story. Happy 80th birthday to the classiest man in hockey.

RAW CHARGE: Tina Robinson wonders what will happen to Atlanta Thrashers fans now that their club has moved to Winnipeg, leaving them with no team to cheer for. She noted the Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes are looking at possibilities at wooing those fans, and wondered if the Lightning shouldn’t consider doing the same.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: OK, cheap shots against Atlanta hockey fans aside, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for NHL teams in the surrounding area to attempt to snatch up some of those fans.

DOWN GOES BROWN: takes a look at this summer’s off-season winners and losers. Hilarity ensues.

SPORTRESS OF BLOGITUDE: presents Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin’s cameo in a Russian rap video.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As a rapper, Ovechkin makes a helluva hockey player. OK, I’m a fine one to talk, I couldn’t carry a tune in a suitcase…
