SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ultimately, if the expectations aren’t too high, and he isn’t too expensive, Sykora might prove a good depth signing for this season.

ARCTIC ICE HOCKEY: “Bettman’s Nightmare” believes new NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan is trying to get a message across to NHL players with his recent suspensions: learn how to use your body to be a better hitter.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some folks believe Shanahan’s heavy suspensions could lead to taking hitting out of hockey. That, of course, is baseless fearmongering from old guard types who fear any kind of change to the game will ruin it. Shanahan doesn’t want to eliminate hitting, he just wants to get rid of the cheap shots.

ST. LOUIS GAME TIME: Brad Lee lists several worries for his Blues for the upcoming season, such as Jaroslav Halak’s ability to step up to the next level, and the health of several Blues like Andy McDonald, T.J. Oshie, Barrett Jackman and Chris Stewart.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Lee isn’t wrong to be worried about those and the other points on his list. Still, there isn’t much to be done about it if you’re a Blues fan, but cross your fingers and hope most of these worries won’t become factors which holds back the club this season.

DEFENDING BIG D: After several weeks of listing the Stars impact players in order, Brandon Worley unveils Jamie Benn as the club’s top potential impact player for this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Most hockey fans, especially those of Eastern Conference teams, aren’t aware of how promising Benn is. If he continues to develop as hoped, Benn will garner considerably more recognition around the league this season.

GRANTLAND.COM: Katie Baker lists the long, long road taken by Sidney Crosby in his recovery from concussion.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby’s injury has forced the NHL to take the subject of head shots and concussions far more seriously. If no other good comes out of his career, that’ll be noteworthy. Here’s hoping, however, Crosby makes a full recovery and quickly regains his scoring touch.
