In today’s medley of notable posts from the NHL blogosphere: Homophobia in hockey may be slowly eroding away…A judge finds a former NHL player used steroids…A look at the career of J-S Giguere…Has Dustin Penner turned the corner?…Who do you keep: Vermette or Brassard?…Ranking the worst shot in the NHL…Different types of fantasy GMs.

HOCKEY IN SOCIETY: “MarkDavidNorman” examines the slow erosion of homophobia within hockey.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s still going to take time, but thanks to the efforts of management like Toronto’s Brian Burke, and players like Sean Avery and Brent Sopel -heterosexuals who openly support gay rights – we’ll hopefully see this erosion move from slow to rapid, as homosexuals gain more acceptance in society in general, and hockey in particular.

MC79HOCKEY.COM: Tyler Dellow highlights a recent report in which a judge found former NHL player Garrett Burnett used steroids in the past to enhance his ability while a professional hockey player.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque has been taken to task by some observers for his recent claims about abuse of PEDs in the NHL, and his efforts to prevent it. I’ve stated elsewhere that I don’t believe PEDs are widespread in the NHL, but neither do I believe some players haven’t used them in the past, as Burnett apparently did, or that some of today’s players are using them. While the NHL stands by its current drug testing policy, I think it could be worthwhile for the league to investigate Laraque’s claims.

MILE HIGH HOCKEY: Looks at the career of Avalanche backup goalie J-S Giguere.

FROZEN ROYALTY: Gann Matsuda wonders if L.A. Kings winger Dustin Penner’s recent strong performance against the Nashville Predators means he’s finally turned things around offensively. He has struggled since joining the Kings at the trade deadline last season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Time will tell if Penner’s turned the corner or if this was just a blip.

Should the Blue Jackets retain or trade Vermette?

THE CANNON: offers the following question: Should the Blue Jackets retain Antoine Vermette or Derick Brassard?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’d retain Brassard, as Vermette’s experience could prove more valuable on the trade block, especially near the trade deadline. Brassard’s still young and still has time to reach his potential, so it might be worthwhile to give him one more season beyond this one.

BACKHAND SHELF:  Justin Bourne examines who’s got the worst shot in the NHL. Among those in the rankings: Tomas Kaberle, Brendan Morrison and Scott Gomez.

DIRTY DANGLE: examines the different types of fantasy hockey general managers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Can’t say I’m in any of those categories, though I am active in waivers, but not on the “pick up and drop players every few days” regard.
