Hejduk named Avalanche captain.

MILE HIGH HOCKEY: examines the pros and cons of the Colorado Avalanche replacing head coach Joe Sacco, plus Milan Hejduk is named team captain.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Inconsistency seems to be an issue for the Avalanche since last season, especially their defensive game. If the Avs fail to show significant improvement by mid-season, Sacco could be in danger of losing his job. As for naming Hejduk captain, that should’ve been done before the season started.

THE HOCKEY WRITERS: Tom Yawney examines the drafting record of the Columbus Blue Jackets, especially of their first round picks, and finds it lacking, as well as a contributing factor to the club’s inability to develop into a playoff club.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A look at the Blue Jackets overall draft record reveals the awful truth. As Yawney claims, horrible drafting has hurt the Blue Jackets.

MATCHSTICKS AND GASOLINE: Mitch Smith destroys the myth that Jarome Iginla is a traditionally a slow starter.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I admit I bought into that myth for some time. Nice work on Smith’s part.

PENSION PLAN PUPPETS: An in-depth look at Nikolai Kulemin’s offensive slump so far this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Whatever the reason for Kulemin’s slump, it’s a troubling step backward, one which the Leafs need him to resolve soon.

HOCKEY WILDERNESS: The potential short and long term impact  the recent concussions of Guillaume Latendresse and Marco Scandella could have, for the two players, and for the Wild.

BLUE SHIRT BANTER: looks at the improved performance of late of Sean Avery with the Rangers, who has been making the most of his second chance with the team this season.

THE GOOD POINT: Jeff Blay takes a closer look at the nutrition of the modern hockey player, interviewing Philadelphia Flyers nutritionist Victoria Mikhail.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A very interesting read, providing considerable insight into the diet of today’s pro hockey players.

NUCKS MISCONDUCT: Sean Zandberg levies praise (with tongue planted firmly in cheek) upon Aaron Rome, the Canucks new scoring machine! Beware, the rise of Rome!

THE STRANGEST ONE OF ALL: Scotty Wazz presents another edition of “Absurd Goalie Monday”. This week: former NHL goalie (and best man at Wayne Gretzky’s wedding!) Ron Low.
