PHILLY.COM: Flyers leading scorer Claude Giroux may be sidelined with a concussion, but his teammates didn’t miss a beat in his absence, scoring five times to down the Washington Capitals.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Didn’t hurt that Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun, by his own admission, had a terrible game.

Parise rounding back into scoring form.

NEW YORK POST: New Jersey Devils winger Zach Parise had his second straight multi-point game as the Devils downed the Florida Panthers in a 3-2 shootout.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like Parise has rounded back into form after a lengthy recovery from last season’s knee surgery.

STLTODAY.COM: A look at the unpredictable career of Blues goalie Brian Elliott, who currently leads all goalies in goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Elliott is challenging Jaroslav Halak for the starter’s role, and appears to have the confidence of head coach Ken Hitchcock.

BOSTON HERALD: Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask is making the most of the additional playing time he’s received this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s sparked some trade speculation, since Tim Thomas is entrenched as the  Bruins starter, but they have no intention of moving Rask, who they see as Thomas’ eventual successor. Rask also appears comfortable with his current situation.

ESPN.COM:  Dallas  Stars call-up goalie Richard Bachman got his first NHL shutout, edging the NY Rangers 1-0.

TAMPABAY.COM: Lightning goalie Dwayne Roloson claims he’s feeling well and his age (42) isn’t affecting him, but his performance this season has so far been less than stellar.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman gambled Roloson had one more good year left. So far, it’s looking like he’s losing that gamble, and could be forced into the trade market for help in the near future.

CALGARY SUN: The LA Kings have received permission from the Calgary Flames to speak with former Flames GM and head coach Darryl Sutter, who they’ve asked to become their new head coach.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: So the Kings answer to their moribund offense this season is to fire their defensive-minded coach and replace him with another one? Anyone else besides me find that puzzling?

KUKLA’S KORNER: Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian could face suspension for hitting Minnesota Wild winger Pierre-Marc Bouchard from behind, driving the latter’s head into the end boards. Bogosian received a five minute penalty plus a game misconduct.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bouchard has a history of concussion injuries. Hopefully, he didn’t suffer another on that hit.

MERCURYNEWS.COM: The San Jose Sharks lost to the Colorado Avalanche in a 4-3 shootout.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sharks have won only twice in their last nine games, and this was their second straight loss in extra time.

DETROIT NEWS: Gregg Krupa calls on the NHL to do more to protect its players from concussion injuries.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The NHL in recent seasons has done more to address the issue, but given the number of players out this season with concussions, including several notable stars, it’s apparent more needs to be done.

PHILLY.COM: Former ESPN hockey analyst Matthew Barnaby plead guilty to four violations related to a recent drunk driving incident, and apologized for his actions. Barnaby received 100 hours of community service, ordered to attend alcohol abuse counselling, and paid $1,950.00 in fines.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Barnaby was lucky, as he could’ve been deported back to Canada. Here’s hoping he gets the help he needs.
