NHL in talks to lend Devils money…Sabres overdue for GM change…Daniel Briere sidelined by concussion…An update on Marc Savard…Henrik Zetterberg receives match penalty…Capitals not shooting much…Rangers victory over Bruins marred by injury to Ryan McDonagh…Blackhawks lose game and Jonathan Toews…John Tavares on a tear…Mark Bell gets second chance with Ducks.

NEW YORK POST: reported yesterday the NHL is in talks with the New Jersey Devils to loan the cash-strapped club money to cover their operating costs for the remainder of the season. The club is also reportedly weighing the option of trading team captain Zach Parise, an unrestricted free agent this summer, for draft picks. The Devils declined to comment, while a league spokesman called the report “inaccurate” but declined to elaborate.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This will add more fuel to the Parise trade rumors leading up to the trade deadline. If the Devils do move him by then, it’ll be a clear indicator of just how  cash-strapped the Devils truly are. I still say they won’t move him as long as they’re in the playoff chase because they could use the post-season revenue he could help them make if he’s on the team.

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Bucky Gleason believes the Sabres are overdue for a change in the GM chair, pointing out how current GM Darcy Regier bungled his opportunity to improve the team via free agency by overpaying for Christian Ehrhoff and Ville Leino, though he mistakenly claims Regier convinced Robyn Regehr to climb aboard as a free agent, when in fact Regehr was traded to Buffalo last summer and was already under contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That boo-boo aside, Gleason does make a good case for the Sabres to consider hiring a new general manager, but it remains to be seen if owner Terry Pegula feels the same way.

CSNPHILLY.COM: Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere has been sidelined by a concussion, becoming the sixth Flyer to suffer one this season.

ESPN.COM: Scott Burnside with an interesting piece on how Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard continues to struggle with post-concussion symptoms which have all but finished his playing career.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Savard’s life has been irreversibly changed by his concussion injuries. While concussions will never be fully eradicated from hockey, more must be done to reduce the instances of these injuries.

DETROIT NEWS: Henrik Zetterberg received the first match penalty of his career, a boarding call on Columbus defenseman Nikita Nikitin.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was clearly inadvertent and Zetterberg, one of the cleanest players in the league,  following the game wanted to speak with Nikitin to apologize and see how he was doing. I doubt Zetterberg will face suspension for that incident.

WASHINGTON POST: The Capitals have failed to crack the 25 shot mark for the past seven games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Could that be why guys like Ovechkin aren’t scoring as much? Nah, couldn’t be…;)

NEW YORK POST: The Rangers 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins was marred when the Bruins Andrew Ference hit Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh from behind, driving McDonagh into the end boards. The severity of McDonagh’s injury was not known.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ference will probably face suspension on that hit.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews suffered an upper body injury during a 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators. Toews is listed as “day-to-day”.

NEWSDAY: John Tavares extended his points streak to 12 games, scoring twice as the NY Islanders downed the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in overtime.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Mark Bell is getting another shot at the NHL, called up by the Anaheim Ducks for Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. It’s Bell’s first game in the NHL in nearly four years.
