Downie shipped to Avalanche.

Various sources report the Colorado Avalanche have dealt defenseman Kyle Quincey to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Steve Downie.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Lighting GM Steve Yzerman had suggested he might not make any further moves if his club kept winning. Perhaps this move is to ensure they do? The Lightning get more blueline depth in Quincey, who’s on the final year of his contract paying him $3.125 million, and is a restricted free agent this summer.  Perhaps Yzerman is also looking ahead to next season, as veteran Mattias Ohlund’s career is in jeopardy due to knee injuries. Quincey’s a puck-moving defenseman who could help the Bolts offensive game, especially their power-play. As for Downie, he’s also a restricted free agent this summer, earning $1.85 million this season. Downie’s a gritty forward with a decent scoring touch who could provide the Avs with additional toughness up front, though he’s prone to bad penalties and his physical style has taken a toll upon his own body.

**UPDATE** Lightning have flipped Quincey to Red Wings. Details to follow.
