Leafs to try van Riemsdyk at center, Habs Diaz files for salary arbitration, and the latest signings by the Canucks, Flames and Oilers.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs will try recent acquisition James van Riemsdyk at center.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I suspected they might do this, considering the difficulty they’re having finding a natural scoring center.

LA PRESSE: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz has filed for salary arbitration.

Backlund gets one-year deal with Flames.

CALGARY HERALD: The Flames have re-signed center Mikail Backlund to a one-year, $725K contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Backlund was considered a promising forward for the Flames, but injuries hampered his development. If he can have a healthy season, he could provide a bit of a boost to their offense.

EDMONTON SUN: In addition to re-signing goalie Devan Dubnyk (two years, $3.5 million), the Oilers also re-signed defenseman Jeff Petry to a two-year deal worth $1.75 million per.

VANCOUVER SUN: The Canucks signed former Hurricanes defenseman Derek Joslin and minor leaguer Patrick Mullen.
