Update on the Canucks efforts to re-sign their two Alexs (Burrows and Edler), nothing new on Evander Kane’s contract talks with the Jets, Nail Yakupov arrives in Edmonton to prepare for the upcoming season, and the Canadiens hire former Hab Donald Audette as an amateur scout.

VANCOUVER SUN: The Canucks have begun contract talks with winger Alex Burrows and intend to do the same with defenseman Alex Edler. Both are eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer. Burrows, who currently earns $2 million per season, could double his money. Possible comparables include Detroit’s Johan Franzen and NY Rangers’ Ryan Callahan. GM Mike Gillis also said there was nothing new to report regarding their interest in UFA winger Shane Doan. The Canucks and Rangers are thought to be front-runners for his services.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canucks will have over $19 million in available cap space for 2013-14, more than enough to re-sign Burrows and Edler, even if there’s a reduction in the salary cap, and especially if salaries are also rolled back.

Kane’s contract talks could be put on hold pending new CBA.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: It’s possible contract negotiations between the Jets and winger Evander Kane could be put on hold following implementation of a new CBA. The Jets reportedly offered Kane a six-year deal worth just under $29 million back in July, but there’s been no further word on the status of talks since then.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some contract negotiations take longer than others to get sorted out. Kane’s isn’t the only notable RFA still unsigned this summer. For more on this, check out one of my recent THN.com columns.

EDMONTON SUN: Oilers top draft pick Nail Yakupov has arrived in Edmonton in preparation for the upcoming season.

TSN.CA: The Montreal Canadiens signed director of scouting Trevor Timmons to a contract extension and hired former Hab Donald Audette as an amateur scout in Quebec.
