Hurricanes on the verge of re-signing Jeff Skinner, Flyers Andrej Meszaros sidelined by tendon tear, updates on Marian Gaborik, Ryan O’Reilly and Tomas Holmstrom, Richard Park heads to Europe, and Mike Modano to divorce Willa Ford.

TSN.CA: The Carolina Hurricanes are on the verge of re-signing forward Jeff Skinner to what Bob McKenzie reports is believed a six-year deal worth an average annual cap hit of $5.725 million.

**UPDATE** It’s official, six years, beginning in 2013-14, worth an annual cap hit of $5.725 million. As per, Skinner will be paid $4.35 million in the first season, and $6 million per for the remaining five years.

Hurricanes close to re-signing Skinner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Concern over his recent concussion history aside, it’s a fair deal for Skinner, who quickly emerged as a rising star with the Hurricanes.

TSN.CA: The Philadelphia Flyers announced yesterday defenseman Andrej Meszaros recently had surgery to repair a torn right Achille tendon, and is sidelined indefinitely.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ll have more on what the Flyers might do to replace Meszaros later this morning in my “Rumors” section.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: cited an interview NY Rangers winger Marian Gaborik gave to Blueshirts United, where he states he’s “feeling good” as he recovers from off-season shoulder surgery.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gaborik isn’t expected to return until mid-December, which explains in part why the Rangers are reportedly pursuing Shane Doan.

DENVER POST: Mike Chambers puzzles over why the Colorado Avalanche haven’t re-signed Ryan O’Reilly yet.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some contract negotiations take longer than others to resolve. O’Reilly isn’t the only notable RFA in this boat (hello there, Jamie Benn, P.K. Subban, Evander Kane, John Carlson, Michael Del Zotto, Dmitry Kulikov and Tyler Ennis), so it’s not as though this is unusual, or reflects poorly on the Avalanche. If training camp starts and he’s still not signed, then it’s time to get concerned. Not in early August.

DETROIT NEWS: The Red Wings are still awaiting word from Tomas Holmstrom if he intends to return or retire.

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Former Penguins forward Richard Park has signed a two-year deal with HC Ambri Piotta in Switzerland.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Former NHL star Mike Modano is divorcing Willa Ford after five years of marriage.
