Profiles of Mats Sundin and Pavel Bure, Flames coach Bob Hartley credits Joe Sakic for helping his success, and updates on Ondrej Pavelec, Nail Yakupov, Jared Cowen and Blake Geoffrion.

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby on the tremendous pressure upon Hall of Famer Mats Sundin when he was captain of the Maple Leafs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sundin was one of the classiest captains in league history. He didn’t blame others when things went wrong, and credited others when things went right. He was one of the greatest players in Maple Leafs history, and one of their best captains.

NATIONAL POST: Bruce Arthur profiles the NHL career of Pavel Bure, and how his style of play separated him from his peers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ve never seen a player who was more dangerous from the blueline in than Bure. His skills and speed were simply dazzling, but that style took its toll physically and shortened his career. Had he stayed healthy, he probably would’ve reached 700 career goals.

CALGARY SUN: Flames head coach Bob Hartley, who coached Joe Sakic in Colorado, considered the former Avalanche captain “the ultimate franchise player”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The soft-spoken Sakic let his play do his talking, and the result speak for themselves. He’s a big reason Hartley has a Stanley Cup ring.

Pavelec could return to Canada.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec has decided not to extend his contract with his Czech Extraliga team, and could return to Canada.

EDMONTON SUN: Nail Yakupov made a triumphant return to Sarnia, where he played his junior hockey, as part of the current Super Series involving Canadian and Russian junior and KHL stars.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators defenseman Jared Cowen is done for the season after undergoing hip surgery.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’ll have an effect upon the Senators if the lockout ends in the near future.

CANOE.CA: Blake Geoffrion’s father said his son is lucky to be alive after suffering a depressed skull fracture in a recent game. Geoffrion underwent successful skull surgery and is out of intensive care.
