MERCURYNEWS.COM/AZCENTRAL.COM: Four unanswered third period goals, including two by Patrick Marleau, rallied the San Jose Sharks from a 3-1 deficit to a 5-3 victory over the struggling Phoenix Coyotes. Sharks center Joe Thornton had four points (1G, 3A) in the game. Steve Sullivan had two points (1G, 1A) for the Coyotes, who played without goalie Mike Smith, still nursing a lower-body injury suffered the previous night.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE/DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Marian Hossa scored in overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp also tallied for the Blackhawks, while Loui Eriksson and Ray Whitney scored for the Stars. Dallas netminder Kari Lehtonen made 38 saves but couldn’t prevent the ‘Hawks from overcoming a 2-0 deficit.

CSNPHILLY.COM/NEW YORK POST: The Philadelphia Flyers got their first win of the season by edging the NY Rangers 2-1. It was a costly victory for the injury-ravaged Flyers, who lost defenseman Andrej Meszaros to an apparent shoulder injury. Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek scored for the Flyers, Taylor Pyatt responded for the Rangers.

STLTODAY.COM/THE TENNESSEAN: The St. Louis Blues continue their strong play at home, blanking the Nashville Predators 3-0.  T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund and rookie sensation Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Blues, while Jaroslav Halak faced only 13 shots from the punchless Predators for the shutout.

DENVER POST/COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Matt Duchene scored twice and Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves as the Colorado Avalanche shut out the hapless Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 in a fight-filled contest.

NEWSOBSERVER/THE BUFFALO NEWS: Eric Staal had a hat trick and Jeff Skinner scored twice as the Carolina Hurricanes downed the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 for their first victory of the season. Jason Pominville had two goals in a losing cause for the Sabres.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: The Anaheim Ducks will have to win more games to win back fan interest from the Stanley Cup champion LA Kings.

DETROIT NEWS: The injury-riddled Red Wings expect to have Todd Bertuzzi, Darren Helm and Jakub Kindl back in the lineup for tonight’s game against the Minnesota Wild. Center Valtteri Filppula expects to be in the lineup tonight, while defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (day-to-day) is a game-day decision.
