The Ottawa Senators have dealt the rights to pending UFA defenseman Sergei Gonchar to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a conditional sixth round pick in this year’s entry draft.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A surprising, though low-cost move, by the Stars. Gonchar reportedly has an offer from the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk (for whom he played during the lockout) worth over $6 or $7 million (depending on the source), and is coming off a three year deal paying him $5.5 million per with the Senators, who wanted to re-sign him but for a cheaper deal.

At 39, Gonchar’s not worth $5.5 million per season anymore, but perhaps could be re-signed to a one-year, bonus-laden deal with a base salary at $4 million? It’ll be interesting to see if Stars new GM Jim Nill can get Gonchar under contract.

**UPDATE** TSN’s Darren Dreger reports Gonchar and the Stars have agreed on a two-year, $10 million deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: $5 million per season for a 39-year-old defenseman whose best seasons are behind him? Not such a low-cost move by Nill after all.
