It’s payoff time for the Jets, Alex Edler receives two game IIHF suspension, an update on Jared Cowen’s contract status, and the pros and cons for the Oilers of a long-term contract for Jeff Schultz.

WINNIPEG SUN: With Jets management having pushed its payroll over $60 million this summer by investing in three core players (Zach Bogosian, Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little), Ken Wiebe believes the onus now shifts upon those core players to reward management’s investment in them.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ll be writing about the Jets expensive investments later this week in an upcoming “Soapbox” article. For now, I’ll simply say that I agree with Wiebe.

Alex Edler (L) receives an additional 2-game Olympic suspension for this hit on Canada's Eric Staal at the World Championships.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Canucks forward Alexander Edler will miss Sweden’s opening two games of the Sochi Olympics as a result of a two-game suspension by the IIHF for his knee-on-knee hit upon Canadian forward Eric Staal at this spring’s World Championships.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Edler was ejected from that game and Sweden’s subsequent two games in that tournament, so this amounts to a four-game suspension.

I’ve heard some fans complain Edler should have been banned from the Olympics altogether, the fact the IIHF felt he deserved additional punishment is praiseworthy. They could’ve simply decided Edler’s World Championship suspension was enough.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports defenseman Jared Cowen is the Senators last remaining unsigned free agent. Cowen’s agent, Rick Valette, expects to meet with the Senators for negotiations this week, adding plenty of time remains to get a deal done.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Even if it takes the remainder of the summer, Cowen will be re-signed. I expect the Senators would prefer a short-term “bridge” contract. As Cowen lacks arbitration rights, he has little leverage.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples asks, “Should the Edmonton Oilers try to get Justin Schultz on a long-term deal?”, examining the pros and cons.
