SPECTOR’S NOTE: And so much for internet whispers the Sharks might shop Pavelski rather than re-sign him to a long-term deal. If anything, this deal indicates the Sharks are planning for their future, which will include Pavelski as one of their core players as the club prepares to phase out their ageing stars.

He’s got a year remaining on his current contract worth $4 million per season, so expect a raise north of $5 million in his new deal.

The 29-year-old center has been a consistent performer for the Sharks, with five seasons of 40-or-more points, including two 50-plus point seasons and two with 60-plus points.

Though not physically imposing (5-11, 190), Pavelski’s a gifted playmaker who is also strong on faceoffs, plays a smart two-way game and can adapt to any forward role. He should continue being a versatile performer for the Sharks over the life of his new deal.

**UPDATE**: The new contract is worth $30 million, or an average annual cap hit of $6 million. So, well north of $5 million.
