Senators coach Paul MacLean preparing for the upcoming season, updates on the Jets and Oilers, and revisiting Borje Salming’s era with the Maple Leafs.

OTTAWA CITIZEN/OTTAWA SUN: Senators coach Paul MacLean won’t have the players vote for the next Senators captain, but will consult with his coaching staff and GM Bryan Murray before making the choice.  MacLean did say the club will speak with the players who are up for consideration, as well as seek fan input.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I believe the Senators captaincy comes down to either Jason Spezza or Chris Phillips.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS/WINNIPEG SUN: The approach to the Jets third season in Winnipeg has a strangely normal feeling, while Zach Bogosian hopes to translate his performance this season into a spot on the US Olympic Team for the Sochi Games in February.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: With Magnus Paajarvi now traded away, David Staples wonders which Oilers players will make hard plays at the net for the upcoming season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If that becomes a nagging issue this season, it could force the Oilers into the trade market – perhaps by shopping Ales Hemsky – to address it.

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby revisits the Borje Salming era in Maple Leafs lore, particularly how the trailblazing Salming broke down barriers for Swedish players.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Salming broke down barriers for all European players. He was the first European born-and-trained NHL star, and every European player who’s followed in Salming’s path owe him a huge debt of gratitude.
