The Phoenix Coyotes have announced the re-signing of forward Mikkel Boedker to a two-year, $5.1 million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The new deal breaks down as an annual cap hit of $2.55 million.

Boedker, 23, had 26 points in 48 games last season, which prorated over an 82-game season would’ve given him over 40 points, which would’ve been a career-best.

His performance last season (and in the 2012 playoffs, where he had 8 points in 16 games) suggests Boedker, whom some critics suggest was rushed into the NHL before he was fully prepared, may be poised for a breakthrough as a scoring winger.

He has terrific speed, can play either wing and is responsible defensively, which is a must on the defensive-minded Coyotes. This deal allows the Coyotes to continue their investment in his development without over-spending for the process.
