Raleigh News & Observer’s Chip Alexander reports the Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Ron Hainsey to a one-year, $2 million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No surprise here.  The Hurricanes had to find a reasonable replacement for Joni Pitkanen, who is now out for the entire season to a broken left heel bone, and they had talks back in July with Hainsey.

It’s a significant reduction from the $4.5 million per season he earned on his previous deal with the Winnipeg Jets, but at this point I doubt Hainsey’s complaining about it. Though his offensive numbers have steadily declined in recent years, Hainsey can still log significant minutes and should provide veteran depth to the Hurricanes defense corps.

The move also leaves the Hurricanes with over $2.8 million in cap space, plus they could get cap relief (if needed) when Pitkanen goes on LTIR to start the season. They currently have six blueliners under contract (not counting Pitkanen), which leaves room to add another veteran defenseman if needed, as well as signing another veteran winger.

Keep an eye on the Hurricanes as they might not be done making veteran acquisitions.
