Results from Friday’s NHL preseason games involving Canadian teams, plus updates on Ryan Smyth, Matt Stajan and more.

TORONTO STAR: The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a 5-2 decision to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. Damien Cox, meanwhile, interviewed Leafs GM Dave Nonis on his plans for the Leafs and more.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets ended their preseason with a listless 5-0 loss to the Boston Bruins, giving them a 1-4-3 record in eight preseason games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the Jets start the season with the same record, then it’s time to worry.

Ryan Smyth starts season on the Oilers top line.

Ryan Smyth starts season on the Oilers top line.

EDMONTON SUN: Veteran Oilers forward Ryan Smyth is making the most of his opportunity starting the season on the club’s top line with Taylor Hall and Ales Hemsky.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: How long Smyth remains there, however, is another matter. If not for injuries to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Sam Gagner (forcing the Oilers to move winger Hall to center), Smyth probably wouldn’t be on their top line.

CALGARY SUN: Center Matt Stajan faces more responsibility and leadership this season on the rebuilding Flames.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No offense to Stajan, but having him as their first line center to start the season indicates just how weak the rebuilding Flames are at that position.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators owner Eugene Melnyk isn’t ready yet to consider rekindling his relationship with former captain Daniel Alfredsson.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:  It’s only been three months since Alfredsson departed for Detroit. That rift is probably gonna fester for a little while.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Jason Botchford believes the Canucks lack of depth is the only reason prospects Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk are still on the team.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:   Once the lineup gets healthier and Zack Kassian returns from suspension I expect Horvat and Shinkaruk to be returned to their junior teams. The Canucks could be busy over the weekend keeping an eye on the waiver wire.

LA PRESSE: Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Bournival is satisfied with the effort he put in to make the club’s roster this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: He’ll have to work harder if he hopes to remain there throughout the season. Preseason is one thing, the regular season is much tougher.
