MLIVE.COM: Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard is preparing for what could be a memorable season. Howard is among the hopefuls to make Team USA for the Sochi Olympics. The Wings have also moved into the Eastern Conference, and will play the Toronto Maple Leafs in the annual New Year’s Day Winter Classic.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mattias Ohlund has yet to announce his retirement, but acknowledged his career may be over due to knee injuries. Ohlund’s last NHL game was in the 2011 Eastern Conference Final against the Boston Bruins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s expected Ohlund will be placed on long-term injury reserve to start this season. If he retires, his salary won’t count against the cap as he was under-35 when he signed his contract.

**UPDATE** A reader has reminded me the Lightning would get hit with a salary cap recapture penalty if he retires.

CSN WASHINGTON: Don’t expect to see Evgeny Kuznetsov attending Washington Capitals upcoming rookie training camp. He’ll continue to honour his KHL contract for the upcoming season.
