THE BUFFALO NEWS: After a disastrous performance last season, Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers took steps this summer to improve his physical and mental conditioning.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Myers has struggled to meet the hefty expectations of his Calder Trophy debut in 2009-10 and the hefty contract (7 years, $38.5 million) he inked two years ago. Only 23, Myers still has plenty of time to improve and regain the form which had observer projecting him as a potential Norris Trophy candidate.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Goaltending has long been the Flyers Achilles heel. They’ll need Mason and Emery at their best to make the playoffs.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Stars forward Rich Peverley will be sidelined three weeks for a procedure to address an irregular heartbeat.

NJ.COM: Former Devils blueliner Henrik Tallinder had harsh words for Devils coach Pete DeBoer. Tallinder played only 25 games last season and requested a trade. He was dealt to Buffalo in the off-season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Winning two Stanley Cups in four years will do that.

MIAMI HERALD: New Florida Panthers forward Scott Gomez plans to use his experience to help guide his younger teammates. Gomez spent his formative years with the New Jersey Devils during their championship seasons and wishes to pass along the lessons he learned to his younger, less experienced new teammates.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gomez’s NHL playing career is in decline, but he’s earned glowing reviews from former teammates and coaches in Montreal and San Jose. Wouldn’t be surprising if Gomez made the transition to coaching when his playing days are over.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: The Columbus Blue Jackets yesterday re-signed Jared Boll to a three-year, $5.1 million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Boll’s made his mark with the Jackets as an agitating enforcer and team player.

TORONTO STAR: After Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby was hit hard during a recent training camp scrimmage by teammate Simon Despres, Mark Zwolinski noted such hits on star players in camp has become a “delicate situation”.  Crosby, who has a concussion history, was not injured on the play.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That seems up to the coaching staff. Some coaches don’t mind it, while others don’t want their meal tickets put at risk by an aggressive player trying to make a good impression.
