DENVER POST: Matt Duchene scored twice and set up another as the Colorado Avalanche extended their record to 9-1-0 by downing the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Fun fact: the last time the Hurricanes defeated the Avalanche was in 1996, when they were still the Hartford Whalers.

NEWSDAY: Josh Bailey’s goal with 1.30 remaining in the third period lifted the NY Islanders to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Evgeni Nabokov made 39 saves for the win.

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Jhonas Enroth made 44 saves backstopping the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. It was the second win of the season for the hapless Sabres (2-9-1), and their first in regulation.

Earlier yesterday, suspended Sabres forward John Scott learned his hearing with the league was set for October 31. Scott is currently suspended for his blindside head shot on Boston Bruins winger Loui Eriksson.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:  I suspect it won’t be a happy Halloween for Scott.
