STLTODAY.COM: Alex Steen’s league-leading 17th goal proved the game-winner as the St. Louis Blues doubled up the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Steen’s been on an offensive tear so far this season. It remains to be seen how long he can maintain this pace, but he’s among the main reasons for the Blues strong start to this season.

SUNSENTINEL.COM: Tim Thomas made 32 saves and Tom Gilbert collected three assists as the Florida Panthers upset the Colorado Avalanche 4-1, marking the Panthers second win in three games, while handing the Avalanche their third straight loss. The Avs also lost top forward Matt Duchene to an oblique injury in the third period.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was only a matter of time until the Avs cooled following their hot start to this season. They’re now facing their first real test of adversity this season.

THE TENNESSEAN: The Nashville Predators usually anemic offense roared to life in a lopsided 7-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: The Phoenix Coyotes remained unbeaten in regulation (9-0-1) at home by dropping the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-3.

NJ.COM: Jaromir Jagr scored twice and Adam Larsson popped his first goal in two years as the New Jersey Devils downed the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1.

NEWSDAY: Frans Nielsen scored in a shootout as the New York Islanders nipped the Detroit Red Wings 5-4, handing the Wings their fifth straight overtime loss.

CSNNE.COM: Boston Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg won’t face suspension for a late hit to the head of Ottawa Senators forward Bobby Ryan.

NBC SPORTS: The Anaheim Ducks yesterday dealt center Peter Holland and forward Brad Staubitz to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Jesse Blacker and draft picks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With Dave Bolland and Tyler Bozak sidelined and Nazem Kadri suspended, this wasn an obvious move by the Leafs to shore up their depth at center. Holland was thrust into action immediately for the Leafs, starting the game on the Leafs first line and playing over 11 minutes.
