The Nashville Predators have signed Derek Roy to a one-year, $1 million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Predators aren’t wasting any time attempting to shore up their depth at center. Having signed Olli Jokinen earlier this month and Mike Ribeiro earlier today, they now add the 31-year-old Roy to their ranks.
Roy’s better days, however, seem well behind him. His offensive production’s been in steady decline since a career-best 81 points in 2007-08. He hasn’t been the same since undergoing left quadriceps tendon surgery three years ago.
Since 2012 he’s bounced from Buffalo to Dallas to Vancouver to St. Louis. While he’ll make a good depth center for the Predators, they shouldn’t get their hopes up that he’ll regain his offensive form. At least they got him for an affordable, short-term deal.
