Flames signed Devin Setoguchi, Panthers pick Aaron Ekblad ready to return from concussion, a profile of Darryl Sutter and a possible clash of agendas in Buffalo.
CALGARY SUN: The Flames signed free-agent winger Devin Setoguchi to a one-year, $750K contract. Setoguchi will have to compete with Jiri Hudler, David Jones, Brian McGrattan and perhaps Joe Colborne for playing time.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: This could also be Setoguchi’s last chance at maintaining his NHL career. Though he’s exceeded 20 goals three times in his career, his numbers have steadily declined since his career-best 65-point performance with San Jose five years ago.
MIAMI HERALD: Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad, the 2014 NHL first-overall pick, has returned to the ice three weeks after suffering a concussion during an exhibition tournament with Canada’s Junior team.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s good news for Ekblad, who hopes to crack the Panthers’ lineup this season.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: Bill Plaschke with a profile of Kings coach Darryl Sutter and his hometown of Viking, Alberta.
THE BUFFALO NEWS: Bucky Gleason writes of a potential inadvertent clash of agendas between Sabres GM Tim Murray and head coach Ted Nolan. Murray is trying to strike a balance between improving his team and finishing last (thus putting the Sabres in good position to win the 2015 NHL Draft lottery), while Nolan will do whatever he can to win every game.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gleason isn’t suggesting Murray and Nolan will have a contentious relationship. Both men want to improve the club. Ultimately, Nolan will do the best he can with the players Murray has acquired via the draft, trade and free agency.
